Modern ASIC miners typically use either air cooling or hydro (liquid) cooling, each designed for different types of mining environments.Understanding the differences between these cooling methods can help miners select the best hardware for their operation.Hydro-Cooled ASIC MinersHydro-cooled miners such as the Antminer S23 Hydro use a liquid cooling system to remove heat directly from the mining hardware. Instead of relying on high-speed fans, heat is transferred through water blocks and cooling loops that move heat away from the ASIC chips.Benefits of hydro-cooled mining hardware include:Higher hashrate performance due to improved thermal managementGreater energy efficiency in large-scale mining facilitiesReduced heat buildup inside mining containers or data centersLower noise compared to traditional air-cooled minersHigher density deployments for professional mining operationsHydro cooling is commonly used in industrial mining farms and large hosting facilities where specialized infrastructure can support liquid cooling systems.Air-Cooled ASIC MinersAir-cooled ASIC miners use high-speed fans and airflow to remove heat from the mining hardware. This is the most common cooling method used in Bitcoin mining devices from manufacturers like Bitmain.Advantages of air-cooled miners include:Simpler installation with no liquid cooling infrastructureLower initial setup costsFlexible deployment in smaller mining setupsEasy maintenance and replacementAir-cooled miners are often used in smaller mining farms, hosted facilities, or specialized home mining environments where large cooling systems are not available.Hydro vs Air Cooling ComparisonFeatureHydro-Cooled MinersAir-Cooled MinersCooling MethodLiquid cooling systemHigh-speed fan airflowPerformance StabilityVery highModerate to highNoise LevelLowerHigherInfrastructure RequiredHydro cooling loopStandard ventilationDeployment EnvironmentLarge mining farmsSmaller farms or flexible setupsWhich Cooling System Is Best for Bitcoin Mining? The best cooling system depends on the scale and infrastructure of your mining operation.Hydro-cooled miners like the Antminer S23 Hydro are best suited for large-scale mining farms and high-density deployments, where liquid cooling systems can maximize performance and thermal efficiency.Air-cooled miners remain a popular choice for smaller operations and flexible mining environments due to their simpler setup and lower infrastructure requirements. For professional operators seeking maximum performance and efficiency, hydro-cooled miners are increasingly becoming the preferred solution for next-generation Bitcoin mining infrastructure. TBD I'm not getting the advertised efficiency on stock settings. Is there something wrong with my miner? Mining efficiency is highly dependent on ambient air temperature. If your miner is pulling more power than expected, in most cases it is due to a higher ambient temperature. You can improve mining efficiency by preventing mixing of hot exhaust air with intake air. Which control board does this miner come with? TBD How can I make this quiet for home use? Stock fans on Antminers can be very loud (~75 dB) at full speed. There are however multiple ways to make them quieter. First way to make them quieter is to run them at substantial underclocking. This will significantly reduce the hashrate, but will also reduce fan noise, since the fans don’t have to run at full speed when underclocked. Another way to reduce noise is by replacing stock fans with an inline AC infinity fan. You can learn more about this here. This method allows running the miners on stock hashrates and may even allow some overclocking in many cases. Third way to reduce fan noise is by running the miners in immersion mode. In this method the miners are immersed in vats of mineral oil or dielectric fluid. This significantly improves heat transfer and enables substantial overclocking. Immersion mining however voids all warranty, is more complex to setup and immersion fluid can act as a solvent and damage some mining gear. We believe that this is still an experimental technology reserved for the most technically inclined. We do not recommend immersing Antminers to most customers for this reason. Stock Antminer firmware does not allow much flexibility in terms of overclocking/underclocking , fan control, automated temperature control etc. In most cases you would need aftermarket firmware to enable quieter operation.
